It's been a long 4 months......but good to be back!!

Guess this post has been a long time coming. If I remember rightly it was january when I last posted. Think it was for the best though. Calming down on the poker front has given me much more time to concentrate on my university work. All my work went pretty well last term, picking up 70% and 87% in coursework, making good progress on my project and actually attending every lecture.

Unfortunately everything has gone tits up this term. My uncle passed away in a not so nice manner which threw a rather large spanner in the project works. That part of the family has been pretty close over the years so the whole thing has messed with my state of mind recently. So much so that I missed my project hand in date and am not sitting my final exams this year.

Thankfully, college and the engineering department have been understanding and have sorted things out for me. They have kind of said hand in the report in August and sit the exams this time next year. Although this means I don't get to graduate with my friends this year, I can't really expect much better from them. Just waiting for them to confirm this offer so I can get on with things. I'm hoping this won't overly effect my job at Deloitte next year, but techniquely I already have a 2:1 BSci from the last 3 years, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Looking on the brighter side, although real life has sucked massively, poker has been pretty good to me lately. In the last 2 months, I've come back to poker, using it as a stress reliever to get away from the work. After dropping down to $2k in January, it's been a pretty sharp rise to $4k. Infact, I passed the mark yesterday with my first session since the whole uncle thing went down. Karma? :) :) As I have down with my other milestones, I took a screenshot to remember. Historically, this has been followed by a massive downswing but with karma on my side I'm not too worried :).

I'm sure you know I love my stats, so here goes.....time to disclose how I'm doing and how much I owe Keys :) . These are my figures from the start of my cash adventure.

Hands: 104,672
Poker profit: $2,329.02
Bonus cleared: $400
Rakeback: $840ish

Cash profit: $3569

Don't think this really gives a correct impression. It's been a game of two halfs really. Looking back, I ran shit and played even shitter during the first 3-4 months. After making the huge change to a TAG/LAG game, it's been a completely different story. Trying not to be too arrogant but I think I've crushed the game since then. Here are my stats since then.

Hands: 51,375

Poker profit: $2,058.74
Rakeback: $598.78

Total profit: $2657.52

Win Rate: 5.06 PtBB/100

Win Rate with rakeback : 6.21 PtBB/100

Would be nice if this could continue as I start moving up permenantly to 100nl. Anyways, think that's most of what i want to say. Laters

Getting crushed

Been a pretty bad week of poker for me. Volume has been extremely low but I've still managed to drop another $200-$300 on top of the $400 at 100nl. I am running absolutely horribly and all that jazz, but I also keep getting owned by the fish. Several times I've failed to bluff them off middle or bottom pair with a double-barrell. It's not like I've been trying it against stations. They just seem to like to call me for some reason. I had this one hand where a guy tried to check-raise me on the flop with a min bet. I called with a small draw. He checked the turn and having picked up extra outs and a feeling he tried to push me off the flop, I had a shot with a 2/3 pot. He called, the river bricked and he scooped with bottom pair. I mean....come on.

I should be happy that people are willing to do this with me, but being on a bad run, I can't seem to make this happen when I have the goods. I may be trying to push it too hard in an effort to win a few pots. Not so much monkey tilt, but a more subtle way to lose. Think this hand is proof I'm definately not monkey tilting yet. Is this always a fold??

Guy who shoved was 30/17, other guy is 19/16.

I'm starting to get really frustrated with poker at the minute. I see all those nice variance-ish free graphs out there and compare them to my shitting graph. So far I've had one 20BI downswing, two 10BI+ downswings and numerous 5s in only 70k hands. Granted, they have been seperated by a huge $1000 up and a nice $700 up, but it is horribly draining to have a confidence shake every 10,000 hands. Is it always going to be like this?? I have no idea how people do this for a living.

Anyways, I've had my rant. I'm off to do some proper work.
Hope you are all running better than me. Tscuh!

100nl shot

For some reason I've had a sense of impending doom for the start of 2009. Having just gone through a nice $900 upswing over christmas, it felt like I was just waiting for an inevitable downswing.......and sure enough it happened. The annoying thing is, is it just a normal downswing or has it been caused by my negativity? I'm hoping that someone has a gem of advice that will help get me over this feeling next time I'm on an upswing. It's horrible. You're not happy when you're winning as you're just waiting for it to stop, and you're definately not happy when your losing. Although watching a $100 pot disappear to another player doesn't really bother me so much anymore, a slide of 4-5 BI really gets at me. Maybe the money is just starting to mean too much to me?

On a slightly weird note, despite this fear I decided to take a proper shot at 100nl, setting $300-$400 as a stop loss. Unfortunately, it didn't go well, losing the $400 pretty sharpish over several sessions. It was a mix of run bad and play bad.....being honest with myself, mostly bad play. Thinking about it, the times I got bad beat stacked were probably balanced by my coolers, sadly leaving the $400 loss down to my rubbish play. Looking back, I think I got too aggressive, falling to the common fancy play syndrome. I'll stick up a few hands as an example.

1.) Player was stealing 35%ish but even still I think the flop is still a bet fold.

Not sure how much poker I'll be playing over the next 2 weeks as I have an unbelievable amount of work to do. Left it late. Pretty standard for me. But I'll keep you updated if anything interesting happens.

Onwards to 2009

As my last post suggested, I'm pretty disappointed with my blogging effort thus far. Pretty much the whole of July and August was dominated by bad beat hands and when I have been running well they've dried up completely. Maybe the problem is I don't really have anything interesting to say, and when I do, don't have sufficent vocabulary to make it an enjoyable read. I remember saying to Nathan that I'm his exact opposite. He posts when he's winning and goes quiet when on a downswing.....definately leading to a much more interesting and optimistic read.

However, what better time than new years to try and turn things around. So. New rule....No more Bad beat stories of any kind what so ever. Talking about a downswing is ok, but if I ever post another bad beat HH, please, someone flame me. Maybe I'll have to think up some punishment or something. Hopefully this should keep me in a more positive frame of mind. I've noticed that this definately makes a difference with me. I feel better, play better and get in more volume when I'm positive.

Anyways, with that out of the way I'll move on to the traditional 2008 lookback and 2009 goals bit. It's been a bumpy ride since I switched to cash in July. Without further ado, here are my results.

Hands: 72,340
Poker profit: $1000.85
Bonus cleared: $400
Rakeback: $503.14

Cash profit: $1903.99

Total Bankroll: $2607

So, between July and now, I've made about $2000. Not bad at all. If you had of asked me back then if I'd be happy with $2k I probably would have said yeah. The only thing I wished I had done was move up to 50nl quicker. I think I had a roll of about 1.7k before I made the permenant jump. I think I'm having the same problem jumping up to 100nl. I've had the roll to take shots for a while, but I still don't feel comfortable there. I have 4-5 BI swings daily so I'm not sure I could handle losing $500 in one session. Might have to alter my BR management rules to something more comfortable.

2009 Poker Goals

I've thought a lot over the last few months about why I'm actually playing poker and what I want to achieve. It's not like I could ever earn enough money to justify doing it for a living and even if I could, I've learnt I might not be able to cope with that way of life. Therefore, poker is always going to be just an additional income for me. Hopefully a substantial one, but definately secondary to a traditional job.

As 2009 will be the year I transistion into a proper job, I've set my poker goals appropriately. So, here goes.....

1.) Continue to work hard at my game

Over the past 6 months I prob spent more time reading and thinking about my game than actually playing. I think it's helped me to understand what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. Hopefully this'll pay off when I move up to bigger games and things become deeper.

2.) Put in more hours once I graduate

10,000 hands a month is pretty poor for a student with 5 hours of lectures a week. This is due to step up over the next 6 months coming up to exams, but I'm sure I could do better than this. I'll set my monthly average target at 15,000 hands per month.

3.) Add more tables to my 6max play

I currently play 4 tables of 6max. I don't want to get carried away as too many tables leads to autopiloting, but I think I should work in at least 2 more tables to my game. This should increase my volume and hopefully boost my hourly rate without taking away from my development as a player.

4.) Get off my cash stake

My staker has been very cool about my situation and has given me huge flexibility over the last 14 months. However, if I'm ever going to make some proper dough off this game, I need to go it alone at some point. My plan is to move to 100nl, grind my share of the BR up to $4k, then go my seperate way. Would be great if I could do this by August, but it could take longer depending on how smoothly things go transitioning to 100nl.

Ultimate 2009 goal : Beat $200nl by 3Ptbb/100 hands playing 6 tables

I don't see this happening for quite a while, but if I work hard, especially over the summer, I don't see why I can't be playing $200nl in a year. Maybe not at 3Ptbb, but why not be optimistic. Afterall, if you aim high and come up slightly short, your probably still pretty high.

If I could maintain 3Ptbb/100 (includes rakeback), My hourly could hit around $50/hr. If I manage maybe 10 hours per week after my job, I could add a huge $250-$400 a week to my wage. Could get some awesome holidays or something. Hopefully enough motivation to keep me going.

Forgot the most important one: HAVE FUN PLAYING

I know I've moaned a lot over the last 6 months, but the truth is, I've really enjoyed playing poker. Hopefully this'll continue or else it's definately not worth it anymore.

2009 Life goals

# Graduate Durham with at least a 2:1
# Survive summer without having to grind a minimum wage job
# Settle into Deloitte and London life
# Get back to satisfactory fitness level before starting at Deloitte
[ healthy body, healthy mind :) ]

So, think that's it. If you made it down here, thanks for reading and I wish you good luck in the new year. Keep in touch!
